I think this is also stop motion animation, not straight up live shadow theatre, but maybe not. Great story telling with simple music. Something to keep in mind for next week.

Handspring-Warhorse Puppet

Get your lunch, and have a look at this 18 min video, linked above. It's worth every minute.
There are a few very important points to look for:
"Puppets always have to try to be alive...they are desperate to live." At around 2:40, there is a wonderful description about the difference between an actor & a puppet, and how that struggle is a metaphor for life. Part of that struggle is to persuade the audience it's alive, and it does so by "turning nouns into verbs."
I'd also like to stress how simple the materials are that they use for their puppets. The engineering & construction is long in development, but the ideas are simple. Part of their process is prioritizing, compromising, and developing a task list of actions the puppet has to be able to do ( a puppet only does what it does, and that's what it does...this puppet does A LOT).
Pay attention to the artists' faces as they manipulate the hyena and also look at what the puppeteers are wearing with the horse, Joey. It is a whole package of emotional involvement and visual harmony.

The Blue Umbrella Clip
I'm
not sure if you saw Monsters University, but Pixar did a short before
the film that I thought you would like. It's called "The Blue Umbrella"
and is relevant to anthropomorphizing! They have only released a small
clip of it, but even in the video you can see how city pieces have been
given adorable little faces.
